Referral Scam Websites are basically...

Chain Link Spam

You are searching for some free stuff, maybe free psn codes.

We already explained the free code generator scam, but you could also come across this type of scam – referral link spamming.

The basic concept

  • The site will tell you to share a referral link.
  • At least 5 people(or more on other sites) have to click on that link
  • If you have referred enough people you should get your full code

That is the basic concept of this “mini-scam“.

We have down here a screenshot of a website that has combined two scams– on the left we have fake surveys and on the right the referral scam.

Underneath, they display your “Code” but in reality, it is just plain text.

(left: Fake Survey Scam, right: Referral Scam)

What happens after you have reffered enough people?

The site tells us that we will be able to unlock the code and that we can come back and…”get look at our other gift cards”.

So in short – you will get nothing.

How does the scammer benefit?

  • They use it to grow the website, though getting a lot of “organic” links. (Having links gives a website value and determines heavily the Google position of the site)
  • They get traffic and this gives Google the impression that the Website is “good”/”alive”
  • They display ads
